YOU WILL NEED

• wooden crate or fruit box

• plastic sheet for lining the crate

• scissors or knife

• soil-based compost (John Innes No 1)

• horticultural grit

• saxifrage plants to fit your crate

• pea shingle

• watering can

1. Line your crate or box with a sheet of thick plastic so that the edges overlap the top. This will prevent the compost falling through any gaps. Use scissors to make a few drainage holes in the plastic at regular intervals along the base.

2. Fill with soil-based potting compost, such as John Innes No 1, mixed with some horticultural grit. Spread it evenly so that it is level and reaches a couple of centimetres (1in) below the rim of the crate. Trim the plastic along the top of the crate.
